Concussions after car accidents

On Behalf of Kaston & Aberle, LLP | Sep 28, 2023 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury

A car crash could inflict harm on drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Only some vehicle collisions in New York result in catastrophic injuries, as numerous accidents, such as fender-benders, involve minor impacts. However, it is still possible to suffer whiplash, bruises and concussions in a minor incident. Concussions sustained in accidents can have more severe consequences than victims may realize.

Concussions and head trauma

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that results from impact. When someone’s head hits an object, the brain will bounce against the walls of the skull. How hard someone gets hit will affect the subsequent effect on the brain. While someone may check for injuries after a car accident, they might not think they suffered harm because they are not bleeding or feeling any serious pain. Still, they might suffer from an undiagnosed concussion.

Concussions range in severity, and a proper evaluation from a medical practitioner may give a patient insights into the problem. Generally, rest and pain relievers could help someone who suffered a concussion. However, there might be other issues when a concussion results in temporary amnesia, fainting or vomiting. If someone faints from a concussion, they might suffer further injuries upon hitting the ground.

Addressing the legal matters after a collision

Car accidents may inflict physical and financial harm on victims. Treatment for a concussion may lead to immediate medical expenses and lost income because the person must miss work to recover. In addition to physical injuries, those involved in an accident may have to deal with property damage resulting from the incident. A civil claim could help the victim recover their losses.

Filing a claim against the responsible party could help an accident victim recover compensation. Settling with an insurance company may require detailed negotiations.
