Fatal car crashes from speeding are on the rise

On Behalf of Kaston & Aberle, LLP | Dec 12, 2023 | Car Accidents

Dangerous car crashes occur on the streets of New York every single day. These crashes kill. Those who survive may be permanently disabled. Saving lives requires lowering the number of accidents on New York streets. Doing so requires people to know more about the causes of car accidents and how to prevent them.

Common causes of car accidents

There are many ways a person can get into either a one-vehicle or multiple-vehicle accident. However, the most common kinds of accidents follow certain patterns and are caused by things like:

  • speeding
  • drunk driving
  • distracted driving
  • drowsiness
  • tailgating
  • poor weather
  • aggressive passing and turning
  • reckless driving
  • poor maintenance

Of these, save perhaps for poor weather conditions, the driver is at fault. Even in that case, wise drivers know to stay off the road when weather conditions make driving unsafe. There are very few car accidents where driver error did not play a huge role.

The danger of speeding

One cause has increased in recent years. Speeding-related crashes that have resulted in deaths have increased by a rate of 28 percent over a three-year period. This is a massive increase, and aggressive drivers are completely to blame.

Overall, speed limits exist for a reason. Making quick decisions is much more difficult when a vehicle is going too fast. In those cases, the driver is often unable to change course soon enough or may lose control of the vehicle. The driver, passengers, other cars and even pedestrians are all at risk.

Driving is an activity that always involves some inherent risk. However, it would be much less risky if people used common sense while driving and obeyed traffic laws. This certainly includes the speed limit.
